Local swimmers win provincial hardware

Local swimmers earned a pile of medals at the June 30-July 3 Ontario Summer Long-Course Swimming Championships in Etobicoke. Champions included Nepean-Kanata Barracudas athletes Jessica Yu, Amelia Nielsen and Mia Zahab, Ottawa Swim Club’s Alexandre Perrault and Finn Tucker, and Swim Ottawa’s Kali Metuzals.

Gymnasts on Ontario & Canada teams

Haley Miller of the Kanata Rhythmic Gymnastics Club recorded a 3rd-place finish in the rope event at a competition in Italy while on tour with Team Ontario. The early-July trip also included a week-long training camp with former Olympian Aliah Garaeva, a 2011 all-around World Championships medallist who competed for Russia and later Azerbaijan.

Wrestler falls to fellow Canadian early at Cadet Pan Ams

National Capital Wrestling Club athlete Devan Larkin lost to fellow Canadian and eventual bronze medallist Adam Scott in his opening match of the men’s 69 kg division at the July 1-3 Cadet Pan Am Wrestling Championships in Peru.

Triathlon nationals come to town

Ottawa will welcome around 1,200-1,500 competitors across all events taking place during the July 23-24 Canadian Triathlon Championships at Dow’s Lake. A local organizing committee of 20+ will add about 350-400 volunteers to help put on the show.

The first-ever T-Ball on the Hill event was held on June 12 to kick off the 46th National Little League Week. Ottawa West and East Nepean combined to enter a team from the western portion of the city, while Orleans, Prescott-Russell, Glebe, South Ottawa and Carleton-Russell made up an Ottawa East squad.

Thanks to their dominant showing at the May 31-June 5 Canadian Espoir Synchronized Swimming Championships in Winnipeg, Nepean Synchro product Olivia Jensen-Large and Gloucester Synchro’s Jade Warren were selected to Canada’s 2016 age 13-15 national team that will compete in the Sept. 1-4 UANA Pan American Championships in Puerto Rico.
