Call doesn’t come for Lions’ Smith at world championships

Ottawa Lions sprinter Seyi Smith attended the IAAF world track-and-field championships last week in South Korea, but didn’t wind up competing since he was chosen for the alternate role in the men’s 4x100-metre relay.
It was his personal coach with the Lions that made that call as national team relay coach, but Smith fully accepted Glenroy Gilbert’s reasoning to keep him on the sidelines.

Akinsulie moves big step closer to Olympic qualification

 Ottawa Lions sprinter Esther Akinsulie and her Canadian 4x400-metre relay teammates got hit by some bad luck at the worst time, but still managed to pull off a performance that drew them a step closer to the London 2012 Olympics at the IAAF track-and-field world championships on Saturday, Sept. 3 in South Korea.

Looking back, it didn’t look to be the best recipe for success, but Nepean-Kanata Barracudas athlete Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson earned a bronze medal in the women’s 200-metre individual medley nonetheless at the world junior swimming championships in Lima, Peru.

Young pentathletes eye spot in world final

Two Ottawa modern pentathletes are after breakthrough results at their sport’s final world championships before next summer’s Olympics, and both Melanie McCann and Mathea Stevens feel that’s exactly what they can achieve at the Sept. 8-14 competition in Moscow.
