Ashbury football leaves local NCSSAA to join CISAA independent schools’ league

The Ashbury Colts will look to renew football rivalries that have lay dormant for decades when the senior boys’ team hosts St. Michael’s College Saturday at noon for the first game in their new CISAA independent schools league.
 
The “instability” of the national capital high school junior football league is what prompted Ashbury to leave the NCSSAA and make the move to what they hope will become their new permanent home.

The Ashbury Colts knocked off the defending OFSAA bowl champions once this year, but they couldn’t turn the trick twice as the St. Peter Knights powered their way to a 37-14 victory in the national capital high school senior football championship on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Minto Field.

The St. Mark Lions gave them just about all they could handle, but the favoured Ashbury Colts survived a major scare in the national capital high school senior football semi-finals on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Minto Field to pull out a 27-24 victory.

The kings have been dethroned.  The St. Peter Knights lost to a National Capital opponent for the first time since 2007, and more than happy to assume their spot atop the high school senior football world were the Ashbury Colts, who knocked off the defending OFSAA bowl champions 6-3 on Friday, Oct. 22 in Rockcliffe.

After a two-year trial in the springtime, high school junior football is returning to its original fall home following a 22-20 vote last week at the National Capital association’s annual meeting with the physical education department heads of each member school.

The high school junior football season won’t be starting up the first week of school this year as was previously the norm. Instead, the junior boys will play in the springtime — a move that had to be made due to a shortage of officials.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School will be back on the field for this spring’s junior football season, electing to take the opposite approach as it did for last year’s first-ever springtime league.
