Yves Sikubwabo’s need for change is akin to his need to run. His most recent change – a move from the University of Guelph to Université Laval this September – has already borne fruit, with a Canadian university individual gold medal and a team title for the Rouge et Or men’s cross-country running team on their Plains of Abraham home course.

Rugby vet scores aplenty to win World Series crown

Ottawa native Julianne Zussman and the Canadian women’s rugby team celebrated a Women’s Rugby Super Series title on July 9 in Salt Lake City. The Ashbury College product scored two tries in Canada’s 52-17 tournament-opening win over England, added another in a 33-5 victory over the United States, and started in the 29-10 championship game against France to complete the Canadians’ run of dominance.

Many local rowers chosen for Canada’s FISU crew

A number of local rowers have been named to the Canadian team for the FISU World University Championships. Hunter Amesbury (Carleton University, men’s four), Matthew Christie (Western University, lightweight men’s single sculls), and Anna Currie (Carleton University) and Alanna Fogarty (University of Ottawa) together in the lightweight women’s double sculls will all race Sept. 2-4 in Poland.

2 local NCAA grads grab big academic awards

A pair of Ottawa-bred NCAA soccer players concluded their collegiate careers by earning major academic honours. A first-team Academic All-American, Colin Phillips was awarded an Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship in late May for his efforts as a three-year captain of the Duquesne University Dukes in Pittsburgh and as a student with a 3.92 GPA.

Local pair make nationals trip to finish Ravens hockey careers

Ottawa natives Pat Killeen and Mitch Zion thoroughly enjoyed their ride in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, and the graduating Carleton University pair made their Ravens careers last as long as they possibly could.

In a first for a local school, the University of Ottawa won the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League National Championships team title. The uOttawa competitive club beat 13 teams including a Carleton U entry at the Feb. 27-28 competition in Vancouver, narrowly edging McGill by a tenth of a point for the gold medal with a score of 71.5.
