Betteridge grabs top whitewater worlds result

Lois Betteridge earned the top result out of a large crew of Ottawa River Runners whitewater paddlers who competed at the July 12-17 World Junior/U23 Canoe-Kayak Slalom Worlds in Poland, qualifying through heats in the U23 women’s C-1 event.

He calls himself the old bull. In 2012, John Hastings was a tiny fraction of a second from reaching the Olympic Games. At the Canadian team trials, a 20-year-old Mike Tayler bested his fellow Ottawa paddler over the course of four whitewater kayak runs by a grand total of .11 seconds to claim Canada’s lone canoe slalom Olympic berth.

Ottawa River Runners paddlers earned 7 podium performances at the 2015 Canadian National Whitewater Championships in Chilliwack, B.C. Pan Am Games silver medallist Cam Smedley won the men’s C-1 competition, followed by his brother, Liam Smedley, while Cam also teamed up with Ben Hayward to win the C-2 event.
