A tiny brush of one gate was all that separated whitewater paddler Cam Smedley from a Pan Am Games gold medal – the two-second penalty imposed boosting USA’s Casey Eichfeld ahead for 1st – but the fastest man down the men’s C-1 course wasn’t about to complain about his slalom silver at home.

Competing on a course about as close to home as possible at the Minden Wild Water Preserve, Dunrobin paddler Cam Smedley collected a Pan Am Games silver medal from TO2015 organizing committee member Michael Chambers of Ottawa and the Rideau Canoe Club on Sunday.

Sam Cornett earned her third medal of the Pan Am Games on Friday night at Exhibition Place with a silver in the women’s team event, but after winning singles bronze and doubles silver earlier, the 24-year-old veteran of the Canadian women’s squash team was disappointed to not complete her collection.

“All boats out of the water!” The call came loudly over the speakers for the second time. Organizers heard thunder, and they weren’t taking any chances. Spectators at the Rideau Canoe Club Canada Day International Regatta sprinted for cover while paddlers hauled their boats onto the grass. Within seconds, the drizzle turned to buckets of rain.

Halfway through her first run at the canoe slalom national team trials in Minden, Ont., Alexandra McGee was already in trouble. The Gloucester native missed a gate on the whitewater course and had to paddle hard against the current to backtrack. She gave up precious seconds in the process and couldn’t make up the difference over her final three runs of the women’s C1 (canoe single) event, placing 2nd behind Calgary’s Haley Daniels, who claimed Canada’s lone Pan Am Games entry in the discipline.
