Figure skater 4th in international season opener

Alaine Chartrand of the Nepean Skating Club placed 4th in her international figure skating season debut at the Sept. 24-26 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany, finishing a point-and-a-half from the podium with her score of 161.35.

Local ice dance teams impress on Jr. Grand Prix circuit

A pair of local ice dance pairs earned solid results representing Canada in August ISU Junior Grand Prix competitions. Audrey Croteau-Villeneuve and Jeff Hough of the Minto Skating Club placed 6th at their event in Slovakia, while Kanata siblings Melinda and Andrew Meng had the 3rd-best free dance en route to a 5th-place finish overall and a new international personal-best score of 130.51 points at their competition in Latvia.

Competing for Great Britain thanks to his parents’ roots in London, Ottawa native Hugh Brabyn-Jones placed 2nd in the junior men’s event with a score of 140.76 points at the April 16-19 Triglav Trophy international skating competition in Slovenia.

Chartrand 10th at Four Continents, worlds up next

National silver medallist Alaine Chartrand placed 10th in the women’s event at the Feb. 9-15 ISU Four Continents Championships in Seoul. The 18-year-old Nepean Skating Club member will compete next at the March 23-29 ISU World Championships in Shanghai.

Figure skater’s smile & spiral light up the rink

Local figure skater Jack Fan says a lot when he glides across the ice in a spiral on one foot, with his free leg reaching for the sky. Fan is autistic and speaks minimally, but the Goulbourn Skating Club athlete has no trouble expressing himself on the ice.
