FC Barcelona has officially arrived in the nation’s capital. Close to 90 players took part in the first set of evening sessions for the new local outlet FCB’s international escola on the week of Sept. 26 at the Dome @ Louis-Riel.

The 2013 national champs knocked off the two-time defending provincial/national champs from London in their semi-final, then held off Caledon 1-0 on the strength of Alex Decouvreur’s goal just before halftime.

Led by Ottawa native Samuel Charron’s 15 goals in 6 games, Canada’s para-soccer team qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Argentina. The 18-year-old was a dominant force at the July 29-Aug. 6 Qualification Tournament in Denmark, becoming not only the youngest player in Canadian Soccer Association history to score a hat trick, but the first ever to score three goals in three consecutive games.

Three days before Ottawa South United Force player Bella Hanisch played for Canada at the Aug. 9-21 CONCACAF U15 Championships in Orlando, she met her teammates for the first time, but that didn’t stop her Canadian team from bringing home a silver medal.

Futuro soccer team turns heads in UK

The Ottawa City Futuro under-12 boys’ soccer team scored nothing-but-wins over youth teams from five British professional clubs during a 10-day overseas trip in August.

The Futuro opened with a 4-2 victory over the Bristol Rovers, followed by 8-1 and 11-0 wins over Cardiff City and Swansea City. Then came a big 5-3 triumph over Southampton.

“They were absolutely shocked by our performance as the only teams that they struggle against are Manchester City and Chelsea,” reports Futuro coach Sanjeev Parmar by e-mail.
