OSU’s Marcus Allen and Ottawa City’s Claire Rea were selected to represent Ontario at the June 25 national final in Montreal to determine which team will represent Canada at this October’s Danone Nations Cup – the world’s largest soccer tournament for players aged 10-12 – in France.

Gloucester Dragons launch special needs soccer program with Ottawa Sport Council Foundation grant

The Gloucester Dragons Recreational Soccer Club were unveiled in May as the first grant recipients of the Ottawa Sport Council Foundation’s charitable endowment fund. The $1,500 grant will help support a new weekly soccer program for children between age 7-12 who have intellectual disabilities.

2 local NCAA grads grab big academic awards

A pair of Ottawa-bred NCAA soccer players concluded their collegiate careers by earning major academic honours. A first-team Academic All-American, Colin Phillips was awarded an Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship in late May for his efforts as a three-year captain of the Duquesne University Dukes in Pittsburgh and as a student with a 3.92 GPA.

The 2016 soccer season is young, but the local Kevin Nelson Soccer Academy already has a big victory under its belt from the off-season boardroom. KNSA has been granted status as an Ontario Soccer Association-Recognized Non-Club Academy (ORNCA) – a relatively new classification the provincial sport governing body created in order to sanction the academies that don’t follow the traditional not-for-profit community club model.
