With training and trials overseas, and national program involvement back at home, it’s been quite the off-season for the Ottawa South United Force Academy 2001 boys. The team’s series of exciting experiences began in late February when four OSU players attended their age group’s Canada Soccer National Excel Camp in Vaughan.

With a 4-2 loss to Mexico on March 4 and a 3-2 win over Jamaica on March 6, 14-year-old Ottawa soccer player Carmin Marin’s Costa Rican under-17 women’s soccer team maintained a faint hope of advancing to the knockout stage at the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship in Grenada, with a final group match against USA looming.

A number of local teams won division titles as the Ottawa Futsal Club welcomed over 70 teams for its annual Bob Rathwell Tournament, held Jan. 23-24 at various gymnasiums in the Nepean/Barrhaven/Riverside South area.

Ottawa centre-back Alexis Martel-Lamothe and the Canadian women’s under-20 national soccer team did not allow a single goal during a dominant showing in the group stage of the Dec. 3-13 CONCACAF continental championships in Honduras, but it all came down to penalty kicks against Mexico with  a berth in next November’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup hanging in the balance.

The Ottawa South United Force and West Ottawa Warriors under-14 boys’ Ontario Player Development League teams wrote yet another piece of history for local soccer this season. For the first time ever, squads from Eastern Ontario finished 1-2 in a top-tier provincial youth soccer division.
