Four years ago, cowbells rang, bands played, and a sea of cheering red and white (along with a patch of Dutch orange) flooded the speed skating oval in Richmond, B.C. for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

It was the site of a major moment in Ottawa sports history as Kristina Groves earned the final two of four career Olympic medals – exploding with joy as she reacted to an unexpected bronze medal win in the 3,000 m, and then smiling proudly but a little painfully as she accepted the silver medal after the 1,500 m race where she was the favourite.

Local speed skaters competed near and far on the Nov. 30-Dec. 1 weekend. For the younger crowd, the Gloucester Concordes hosted an Ontario Cup short-track event for the province’s top youth skaters, while some of the older elite skaters competed nationally in Ste.-Foy, Que. and internationally in Kazakhstan.

Blondin ‘confident’ Olympic debut will come in 2014

It was a fantastic finish to a career-best campaign for speed skater Ivanie Blondin. The 23-year-old Ottawa native capped her 2012-13 season by placing eighth in the 5,000 metres at the world single-distance speed skating championships in Sochi, Russia.
