Local swimmers win provincial hardware

Local swimmers earned a pile of medals at the June 30-July 3 Ontario Summer Long-Course Swimming Championships in Etobicoke. Champions included Nepean-Kanata Barracudas athletes Jessica Yu, Amelia Nielsen and Mia Zahab, Ottawa Swim Club’s Alexandre Perrault and Finn Tucker, and Swim Ottawa’s Kali Metuzals.

Local synchro athletes dominate espoir nationals

Thanks to their dominant showing at the May 31-June 5 Canadian Espoir Synchronized Swimming Championships in Winnipeg, Nepean Synchro product Olivia Jensen-Large and Gloucester Synchro’s Jade Warren were selected to Canada’s 2016 age 13-15 national team that will compete in the Sept. 1-4 UANA Pan American Championships in Puerto Rico.

Gloucester Synchro Swim Club and Nepean Synchro Swim Club athletes smiled and swam their way into numerous top finishes at the May 19-22 Ontario Open Age Group Synchronized Swimming Championships.

The host Ottawa National Diving Club earned an outstanding diver award in each category their athletes entered, as their team of five athletes earned 6 gold medals, 3 silver and a bronze at the Tier 2 Provincial Championships on May 28 at Nepean Sportsplex.

In a first for a local school, the University of Ottawa won the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League National Championships team title. The uOttawa competitive club beat 13 teams including a Carleton U entry at the Feb. 27-28 competition in Vancouver, narrowly edging McGill by a tenth of a point for the gold medal with a score of 71.5.

Nepean-Kanata Barracudas swimmer Mia Zahab won the girls’ 14-year-olds 1,500-metre freestyle race by over 16 seconds as her club hosted the March 3-6 Ontario Long-Course Spring Provincial Swimming Championships at the Nepean Sportsplex.
