Carp’s Joanna Brown earned a career-best fifth-place finish at a senior World Cup triathlon race on May 19 in Huatulco, Mexico.

Out of almost 2,500 athletes, Ottawa competitors were front-and-centre at the 2012 Ontario Summer Games, earning a ton of medals across the board in 28 sports from Aug. 16-19 in Toronto.

Carp's Joanna Brown made her World Triathlon Series Olympic distance debut on April 19 in San Diego and put in a solid race against the world's best, finishing 18th in a time of 2:02:39.

Matt Vierula of the Bytown Storm placed 11th, while Carp native Joanna Brown was fourth in a March 16 Pan American Cup triathlon race in Sarasota, FL.

In her first season in the category, 19-year-old  Joanna Brown of Carp won a bronze medal at the world under-23 women’s triathlon championships on Oct. 20 in Auckland, New Zealand.

It’s been a different path for each of them, but current or former Bytown Storm team members Samantha Klus, Matt Vierula and Joanna Brown have each punched a ticket for the same place – Auckland, New Zealand, where they’ll compete in the Oct. 20-22 triathlon world championships’ junior and under-23 categories.

Four months made a world of difference for Samantha Klus of the Bytown Storm triathlon club. The Bell High School senior began her season with an eye-opening experience at the North American junior championships in Mexico, when she placed 13th out of 16 racers.

Over 50 young athletes swam, biked and ran their way through a beautiful Baxter Conservation Area course in Kars for the Baxter Beach All Terrain Kids Triathlon on June 16.

For the second year in a row, Carp's Joanna Brown was recently named Triathlon Canada's junior female athlete-of-the-year for her 2011 season.
