Fractures, dislocations & other freak injuries wear down triathlete Brown

It’s been a painful year all around for Joanna Brown. From not achieving her pre-season goal of a world junior title, an endless number of freak injuries and the mental battle of not being able to train properly when that was the main focus of her life, the Bytown Storm triathlete calls 2011 “a rollercoaster ride” – one that ended with a trip to the hospital in Beijing, China.

The Bytown Storm triathlete was in the lead pack at the Triathlon Junior Pan American Championships in Edmonton, but dropped out shortly into the run portion of her Sunday, July 10 race due to injury.

Joanna Brown of the Bytown Storm placed sixth overall at the world junior triathlon championships in Beijing, China yesterday, while teammate Tristan Woodfine placed 22nd in the men’s event.

She’s now the city’s top triathlete following the Ottawa Sports Awards dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Algonquin College, and come next year’s banquet Joanna Brown of Carp may very well find herself in contention for the overall female athlete-of-the-year prize.
