On top of Kelleigh Ryan’s exclusion due to her fencing event rotating out of of the Olympics this quadrennial, sport politics kept another local athlete out of the Games as well. Two-time Olympic hammer thrower Sultana Frizell of the Ottawa Lions Track-and-Field Club was not nominated for Canada’s track-and-field team despite hitting the international standards set out to make her eligible.

Simac, Canadian men’s volleyball team, end 24-year Olympic drought

It was a moment 24 years in the making. The last time the Canadian men’s volleyball team had qualified for the Olympics was 1992, but on June 5, after nervously watching from their hotel in Tokyo as Poland pulled out a 27-25 final set win over Australia, the drought was finally over, the result of that match sending Canada back to the biggest stage in sport.

A provincial silver medal wasn’t enough for the Maverick Bandits 14-and-under boys’ volleyball team. They came into the May 6-8 14U Eastern Canadian Championships hungry for more, and they did just that, capturing a historic gold medal in front of a hometown crowd at Carleton University.

The Maverick 14-and-under boys’ team produced Ottawa’s top result at April’s Ontario Volleyball Association provincial championships in Kitchener-Waterloo, and they’ll carry the torch as the region’s top hope once again come the Eastern Canadian Volleyball 14U Championships, set for May 5-8 at Carleton University.
