Ottawa Lions athlete Emma Galbraith not only achieved her goal of reaching the final in the women’s 800 metres at the Commonwealth Youth Games today, she did it by winning her heat in a time of two minutes, 16.42 seconds.

Galbraith, 16, finished almost a full second ahead of the second-place competitor from England and also bested runners from Barbados, Cyprus and Swaziland. The Franco-Ouest high school student will now race in Sunday’s final in Isle of Man, Great Britain.

“Like any other athlete, I dream of achieving my personal best,” Galbraith says in her Commonwealth Games Canada bio, adding she looks forward to trading gear, learning about other cultures and soaking up everything related to international competition. “I'm really looking forward to the Commonwealth Youth Games, it will be a great experience and I'm hoping this is only the beginning of my international athletic career.”

Immaculata High School’s Denray Jean-Jacques also competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games, finishing eight overall in the men’s 400 m.
