Sebastian Cino, Jackson Roy, Cameron Porter and Cameron Bruce recorded a perfect team score for Lions Red as they swept all four of the first positions in the under-20 men’s event at the Oct. 3 Capital XC Challenge.

“I didn’t do anything tactical, I just sort of held my pace throughout the race and tried to keep it same the whole race – seemed to work OK,” smiles Cino, who covered the 6 km course in 17:20. “It felt good (to place 1st).”

Only 13th at the high school cities as a junior boy, Cino has scaled the ranks rapidly in the past two years and now plans to run cross-country at the university level in the future.

Roy, the Heat 2 winner, was also pleased with his performance in the 18-athlete competition.

“Coming 1st is definitely special, I haven’t done that many times,” highlights the future University of Ottawa Gee-Gees runner, noting the opportunity to race was treasured already.

“It felt really cool to be part of something so unique, given the situation,” he adds.

Roy says the cancellation of the high school cross-country season was “extremely frustrating.”

“Especially since your senior year is the one you look forward to the most,” underlines the Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School athlete. “I quickly learned to accept it though, because at the end of the day there’s nothing we can really do about it. So I decided to focus on the things that I could control myself.”
