The 67th annual Ottawa Sports Awards were held on Wednesday night, where the city’s top athletes and teams from across more than 65 sports were recognized for their accomplishments in amateur athletics in 2019.
During the night of the Ottawa Sports Awards, Elly Woods sat nervously as she routinely checked her phone. It wasn’t in case word may have gotten out about the fate of the Male Athlete of the Year Award – since her husband, Mike Woods, had been announced as the winner two weeks prior – but because he was mid-race, on the other side of the globe.
Just because they’re given an award – or another award, in the case of many of this year’s Ottawa Sports Awards lifetime award recipients – doesn’t mean everything is all of a sudden going to be about them. A lifetime of dedication to sport instills certain selflessness, morals and principles, at least two of this year’s headlining winners agree, and it’s just that that they’ve spent so much time trying to pass along to others.
